The Athletic Frogs

March 30th, 2011 by riesenrr · 1 Comment · Biology

Scientists have recently performed tests on poison dart frogs and have found out that they are more fit than the average frog.  The reason for this, scientists believe, is that the poison dart frogs are picky eaters and need to forge more to get their food.  Also, they think that the poison dart frog’s metabolism is higher.  Scientists have also discovered that the brighter and more poisonous frogs are more “athletic.”

This is very interesting news.  I wonder why the more poisonous frogs are more physically fit.  Scientists need to discover if there is something in the poison that increases metabolism.  These findings could help athletes around the world compete at a higher level.

Interesting article riesenrr. After reading this article I learned that the “spectacular hues” of the frogs actually serve as a broadcast of their special built-in weapon: skin secretions which contain harmful toxins called alkaloids. Their color patterns warn other animals and predators to stay away from the frogs. I also learned that the way they performed these fitness tests was by measuring oxygen uptake during the frog’s exercise. Juan Santos of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, NC, placed frogs in rotating plastic tubes, turning the tubes like hamster wheels, forcing them to run. He calculated the frogs’ metabolic rates while at rest, and again after four minutes of exercise. He found that the most vivid and deadly species had the higher aerobic capacity than the others.

I agree with what you said about these experiments helping athletes all around the world. Researchers can find out more about why certain frogs are more athletic than others, and then apply that to humans. It could improve athletes in every sport and in every country.
