Songbirds Provide Insight Into Speech Production

March 25th, 2010 by schobeef · No Comments · Biology

Physicists at Penn State are getting new knowledge in how the human brain works. This new knowledge helps them to understand vocal behavior, human speech production, and speech disorders. They have obtained this knowledge through studies done on songbirds. Scientists are looking at how songbirds transmit impulses through their nerve cells in the brain. This is what causes singing. There are many similarities between birdsong and human speech so songbirds are the best candidates for this research. Just like in the human language, birdsong is made of syllables. Scientists test songbirds because they are much simpler than humans. To read more click here.

I think that this is very important because this helps us better understand how humans work. This new knowledge is good because it may be able to help scientists better understand the reasons for speech disorders and one day be able to not just treat but cure the speech disorders.
