Physics in Luging

During a luge run in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, Nodar Kumaritashvili flew off the luge track at about 90 mph. The track was not kept up to pace with the increasing speed of improving athletes.  The athlete flew off the track into a steel pole.

Physics can be used to increase the safety of the luging courses. An object in a collision comes to a velocity of zero. If  an object’s velocity is brought to zero at a slower rate the impact the athlete would experience would be less. This can be done by putting padding onto objects surrounding the luging course. There is no exact equation for calculating the survivability of a crash but there are many approximations that can be used.

Physics could also be used to make chances to the shape and design off the luging track. By studying physics we can increase the safety of sports and decrease the number of fatal accidents there are.
