Good Vibrations

March 23rd, 2010 by watsonme · No Comments · Physics

A new device has been developed that can obtain energy from the smallest of vibrations.  This device may be able to power electronic devices with batteries that don’t have to be changed as often, or batteries that can be self-charged.  Scientist at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg used a process called the “piezoelectric” effect.  This is when crystals and other materials are twisted and therefore generate electricity.  This new device would also increase vibration frequencies from which energy could be obtained.

This could mean huge advancements in certain areas.  One project that is being worked on is unmanned aircraft.  A device attached to the wing would create electricity from the wing vibrations.  Another project is for bridges that would use the traffic vibrations to create electricity for power sensors that would detect defects in the bridge.
