Could Smell Play a Role in the Origin of New Bird Species?

March 23rd, 2010 by kimb · 1 Comment · Biology

Indiana University Bloomington study of organic compounds just found a new usage about bird’s smell. They said, the smell can affects birds in many different ways. “Differences in smell could be affecting sexual behavior, parental care and even contribute to speciation.” (biologist Danielle Whittaker). I did not know anything about smell’s impact until today. The scientists are working harder on this discovery. They believe there’s still more for us to learn. Even the birds are very similar, but the living environment will make their behavior different to each other. The smell is part of the living environment for the birds. Like living by the pollution area or natural area will make a big difference.

I really enjoyed this article. It seemed very interesting and amazing. It’s amazing that, how can we discovery these little tiny things. Not only amazing but also very important. As biologist Danielle Whittaker said, we still need to learn more about it. If they can find more about it, then they will apply those to us. The human’s smell system is similar to other creatures’.

I think that what scientists has discovered is crazy and defiantly unique. How birds smell don’t just smell things but their smell impacts how they act in nature and in life in general. Who ever thought a certain way a bird is acting could be because of what it smells, and that even though all birds are similar their living environment can affect them.

What if living in highly polluted areas with much smog and dirty recycled air could be affecting how we as humans act everyday. Maybe we should be more aware of the air and watch what we use such as diesel and gas and other things that pollute the air.

We should take a step and try and make our earth more greener and healthier so that future generations will be living in a good environment.
