How do they do it?

February 25th, 2010 by dullbj · No Comments · Physics

In the Winter Olympics, one of the major headlines has been about Lindsey Vonn and her leg injury.  Athletes deal with bumps and bruises all the time, and it isn’t always easy or smart to play through the pain, but as all former and current athletes know, that competitive drive inside everyone makes us feel invincible at times.  Jim Souhan marveled at these athletes and their perseverence and toughness in the Winter Games.  Souhan commented how he is amazed at what these athletes can do.  Some people have back problems or knee problems, and struggle sitting and standing back up, or bending down and trying to touch their toes.  Athletes are clearly gifted by God, and have extraordinary talents.

I think that Souhan makes a good point, because for everyone, whether it’s Lindsey Vonn, Kobe Bryant, or the average guy, they all will reach a point where their body can’t keep up with what they want to do.  Life won’t always go our way, and our bodies eventually give in to wear and tear, and we must give up basketball, skiing, or even bowling.  Sports are a big part of life for thousands, even millions of people, and it is always sad to see their careers come to an end.  So as we watch the Olympics, or play in a weekly soccer game at the park with friends, we should remember to take care of our bodies and be happy that we are given the talents we have and that our bodies can keep up with us, for now.
