Big Brother Like Never Before

Wouldn’t it be great if people could read minds?  What if you could know all there is needed to know about someone without ever speaking to them? Right off the bat you could find out whether someone is compatible, single, married or anything else you would like to know.  This is all possible with the new software from Polar Rose called the “Recognizr”. The “Recognizr” would be available as an application on smart phones.  Read more here.

This new software takes a picture of the desired person, and it will find their social networking site, such as Twitter, Facebook, Skype, and Yahoo, using 3D facial features finder.  If one has the app, they can allow any person to find them using the “Recognizr”.  Although this is another step in the technological advances of social networking, we have to ask, where is line drawn? If someone can decide they are not interested in talking to you with the click of a button, how would that change society as a whole? This may also give an open door for predators and other criminals.  The use of this software may also make people more wary of what they put on their profiles, always casting themselves in the best light.

The software and technology to create this application sounds rather impressive. The application would have to be able to match your face with one of the millions of people on Facebook or Myspace or any other social-networking site. There are billions of people who have some sort of social-networking site, so the fact that the application can take a picture and have no trouble at all finding that person on the internet, is astonishing. The facial recognition process of the application must be very advanced and must work very well.

However, as impressive as the technology may be, the idea of it sounds rather twisted. As the post stated, this could lead to cases of predators, criminals and maybe even stalkers. There is already a problem of cyber-stalking and predators today in the world. This application would more than likely just increase these issues. Also the article itself said that “what the developers had in mind was a way to bridge the gap between how people ‘used to meet in the real world’ with how they are now meeting through social networking.” Communication these days is nothing like it was a hundred years ago. Hand-written letters are close to being obsolete. Is face-to-face conversation with someone you just met about to disappear as well? This application would deplete the need for talking to someone you just met to get to know them. I feel that this is just another piece of technology that is not needed and unnecessary.
