Virtual Reality on the Way?

January 6th, 2010 by matteuje · 1 Comment · Physics

Many of us are used to grabbing a controller, sitting down, and enjoying a game like Call of Duty or Halo. Soon, however, we may be playing in a different way. Currently, two types of virtual reality games, the virtual reality system and the augmented reality system, are being worked on by MRX Corporation. While games available for mass market are probably a long way off, the fact that we have the technology is just one huge step closer. You can read more here.

I believe that virtual reality breakthroughs will become very important, once they can get the technology right. It allows for an environment where you can make mistakes, so people like pilots, surgeons, marines, and many other people with life-or-death jobs can practice their professions. Not only that, but this technology could also be used for entertainment, like the video game systems currently being worked on. There are many possibilities for this kind of technology.

I agree that this breakthrough in technology would be extremely beneficial to everyone. As Joey pointed out, many people who’s lives are on the line in their jobs have a safe environment to practice in, where, if they do make a mistake, they are able to learn from it without being harmed. This safe environment may lead more people who are considering those jobs to go into that profession because they are able to hone their skills before applying them to real life.

However great it would be for real life practicality, I think it would hurt our society if it were to be put into a video game system. Many people already spend hours on their gaming systems daily and adding a virtual reality aspect to them may end up making people more addicted to gaming systems then they might already be. However this technology is used, it is still an amazing leap forward in our society.
