New Motion Capture Technology

January 4th, 2010 by meyersrr · No Comments · Physics

Everyone is raving about the new movie: Avatar. Did you know that alot of science actually went in behind the film?

While filming the movie, they use special face-capturing cameras to actually convey true human emotions in the giant blue people. A small camera connected to a sort of helmet was extended from the actor’s face and recorded solely their expressions. This was then fed into a computer which was able to take the images of their face and morph them with the giant blue people, thus creating a believable humanoid character.

I think this is a huge breakthrough when it comes to the way CGI movies are filmed. They can now not only create complete creatures on the computer, but they can actually animate them with true, human expressions. I think this is absolutely extraordinary.
