Scientists Investigate Cause of ‘Singing Dunes’

December 17th, 2009 by unkest · No Comments · Physics

Scientists Investigate Cause of 'Singing Dunes'A new phenomenon has been discovered awhile ago. It is about singing sand dunes! When an avalanche or sand is pushed, people can hear a loud monotonous sound that can last for a couple minutes and can be heard up to a mile away. They are proposing this is a completely new way of making sound. Read more here.

Scientist still do not exactly know what is making this noise. Wind isn’t a factor in this equation.  The whole dune isn’t resonating, it is just from the grains of the sand. This sound can be made by people just moving the sand around, and also the scientist in their lab. This is just a phenomenon to wrap your mind around.
