Plant Life in Arid Desert Soils

December 9th, 2009 by schobebj · No Comments · Biology

Plant life in arid desert has become  more sparse. As the climate in the world gets hotter the nitrogen in the soil, which is very important for plants,is leaving the soil at a fast rate. The nitrogen acts as a fertilizer for these plants.  he less nitrogen means less plants which could also ultimately lead to less animals also.  the discovery of how when the weather is hot more nitrogen leaves the soil. “This discovery is completely reorganizing how we think about nitrogen in desert ecosystems,” said Robert Sanford.

In the past  researchers have found that soil microbes near the surface produce nitrogen gas that goes  into the air. They have now found out that a non-biological process is in affect. this is the process of the nitrogen leaving the soil at a higher rate in a warmer climate. Read the article here.
