Discovery In Worms Points To More Targeted Cancer Treatment

November 12th, 2009 by mccurdkd · 2 Comments · Biology

It is impressive what scientists study. In this case they are testing worms. What they discovered might be a potential cure for cancer. It sound far-fetched, but just think about it a second. A human and a worm look very different, but in a cellular perspective they look pretty much the same. So the scientist did some tests on these worms. An important gene in the human body called PTEN is basically your anti-cancer system. However many people lose this gene when they become older. Since these tests could not be done to humans yet, they used worms. They added the PTEN gene and the worm lived much longer than normal, and when they decreased the PTEN the worm died. So if they can increase this gene in humans we might build an immunity. If you want to read the article yourself then go ahead and click here

This will greatly help the world because cancer will be a non-common disease in humans. This will save many lives and bring new hope in victims. This also might increase the life expectancy in the human race. It is amazing how something as small as a worm can bring new hope into people.

I agree with what the man who posted this is telling us. It is very weird what they are doing and it does in all realistic manners sound “far-fetched”. But if u do take to think about what they really are doing here, it sounds like it could work if worms really do have the same “cellular activity” as ours.

This article really does have some importance, because if what the author of this article is telling the truth and not something that is what it seems, which is lies, we could really make some progress on the cure or immunity to the fatal disease known as cancer. On the other hand if he really is telling us lies then the only thing this article is telling us is worthless and would just be a waste of time.

I agree with almost all the facts you have said I agree with. I have never thought about how worms are very similar. Its wierd how the PTEN gene can work the same with the worm, and how it extends the worms life. Because of that we have figured out that if we produce more PTEN we might live longer. You presented this information very well through your article.

This is a very well thought article, with a very well thought idea. Many people do not know this, and because of that people are uneducated about how cancer works. This article has great significance, because it effects all of us, not just some. If it effected only some of us this topic wouldn’t be up for debate, and for research. This is a exciting article and it defenitly isn’t “worthless” or “waste of time” just like bakerca had commented about.
