The nose. Quite possibly the difficult sense to mimic. However, with new technological advances, an artificial nose is being developed and the results would be unlike anything we’ve heard, seen, or smelled. Read more here: A scent of promise for artificial noses.
The people at CogniScent are working on an artifcial sniff that can smell things from mold to chemicals. Potential uses for the faux-nose could be distinguishing cancer from someones breath or identify if there are airborne toxins on the battlefield. Researchers at MIT are also working on a product called “RealNose”. And on another note, the Space Shuttle just came back to earth carrying “ENose”, which collected scent data for about six months.
Whatever the prototype be for an artificial nose, we can be confident in saying that we are moving forward in this field of technology.
