Honda’s New Unicycle

September 24th, 2009 by faustlg · 1 Comment · Physics

Honda, the Japanese company which makes cars, ATVs, and robots, has unveiled a new unicycle design. This unicycle uses the same technology as their robot ASIMO. Unlike unicycles we are familiar with, this one has balance control to deter riders from falling off. The wheel is composed of smaller wheels, so it can be steered diagonally. The rider steers the unicycle by shifting his or her upper body, and the unicycle is powered by a lithium ion battery, which propels it to 3.7 mph.

This unicycle’s unique technology can also be applied to different areas in the physics world, such as other new transportation systems. The balance and steering controls can be used, perfected and utilized in our society. Someday, like the Segway, it also may become an interesting and entertaining way to get around. Through Honda’s thorough research for this unicyle, new and interesting products may come about, just as this unicycle enlisted technologies borrowed from ASIMO. Watch the video for a demonstration!

I believe that this technology developed by Honda will advance the Physics world forever! Not only because this is very unique and as never been done before but this unicycle is extremely light. It weighs less than twenty-two pounds and is onlytwenty six inches tall. This article says that Honda is not looking to immediately sell this but look at its potential uses. I believe that this new form of transportation will indeed impact the phyics world forever.
