That’s Cold!

September 27th, 2009 by christbr · 1 Comment · Physics

The latest computer discover comes from San Diego State University. Previously, the best integrated circuit could operate at 1.5 degrees Kelvin above absolute zero, or negative 457 degrees Fahrenheit. That temperature is even colder than the average temp. of deep space and can only be created in special labs. The new circuit can operate at a nice 125 degrees Kelvin, 234 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. It is also considerably cheaper. A liter costs about as much as a liter of gasoline if you add a little bit of liquid nitrogen. To read more click here.

This discovery is important because now we can build more, cheaper computers for commercial use. And everyone needs to buy cheaper these days.

This article caught my eye because we had to watch a video about absolute zero last year in Chemistry class. In this article Leonid Butiv said “Our goal is to create efficient devices based on excitons that are operational at room temperature and can replace electronic devices where a high interconnection speed is important.” It also states “that Excitons are pairs of negatively charged electrons and positively charged “holes” that can be created by light in a semiconductor such as gallium arsenide.” Acheieving absolute zero would not only be a great acheivement but it could also be used in making new technologies.
