Ancient And Bizarre Fish Discovered: New Species Of Ghostshark From California And Baja California

Eastern Pacific Black Ghostshark

In this article, a new species was discovered. It is known as the Eastern Pacific black ghostshark. This discovery is a new species of “cartilaginous fish” to be described from California waters since 1947. The ghostsharks are perhaps the oldest types of fish today. Their closest living relatives are the sharks. These ghostsharks have skeletons composed of cartilage, just like sharks. Also with this new species, the ghostsharks have retractable sexual appendages on the forehead and in front of the pelvic fins and a single pair of gills. Ghostsharks “were once a very diverse and abundant group, as illustrated by their global presence in the fossil record”.

This was a very intresting article and with this new discovery of new species that had survived through the age of dinosaurs, it could bring more information to the world. As advances in research and discovery continue, perhaps more will be known about these living fossils and their diversity in the world’s oceans.

This article is very details, and I agree with the author, but I want to add something in it to make it even more details. Ghostsharks are not only oldest but also the most enigmatic groups of fishes alive today. It’s ture that their closest living relatives are sharks. But not only that, their evolutionary lineage branched off from sharks nearly 400 millians ago. That’s why they are close, but not same.

I really like the article. Because it showed me that our science technical is getting better and better. If we are stay in same level for long time, then we can’t go to figure out the stuff that God created. The article also showed me that, our human has the ability that other living things doesn’t.

The Bible doesn’t mention the age of the earth. The time frame of millions of years required for evolution is not consistent with Scripture. This is a closely related species to the shark and an exciting discovery!
