This article is about all the plastic debris that has been found in the Pacific Ocean. It is called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. A very fitting name seeing as that is what it is. A research vessel left from a port in San Diego to go some 1,000 miles off the coast of California to this patch of debris. Scientists went there to annalize how big of a problem this is and if it will effect marine life. The Scientists hope that this expedition will result in an increased awareness of the growing issue. “Finding so much plastic there was shocking,” said Goldstein. “How could there be this much plastic floating in a random patch of ocean–a thousand miles from land?”( from article). Hopefully Researchers can figure that out. Many people probably do not understand how important this issue is. They need to realize that all those plastic bottles and all that other garbage that goes into the ocean effects marine life. Trash doesn’t just stay on the coast; it goes out into the ocean. 1,000 miles into the ocean and probably farther. And debris definitely doesn’t just stay on the surface, but goes down deep. When something effects the environment it effects people, so all people should care about this issue and want to do something about it.
