Mockingbirds In Fickle Climates Sing Fancier Tunes

May 31st, 2009 by watsonme · 1 Comment · Biology

As we all know, different birds have different songs, and scientists believe that climate may have something to do with that.  A study was placed on a variety of mockingbirds.  The study showed that mockingbirds living in more unpredictable climates have more elaborate songs.  If the climate becomes unpredictable, then survival is harder, and orgnisms in that environment need to adapt.  The way that mockingbirds attract a mate is by their song, and in an unpredictable climate it is hard to attract a mate, so male mockingbirds began to sing more complex tunes to attract a mate easier, and further ensure their survival.

I think it is amazing how the minds of animals are so complex.  They know what to do survive, and they know how to adapt to their environment for survival.  They do things as little as singing a more complex tune to survive in a harsh environment.
