In a developing fetus, cones, which help distinguish color during the day, develop before light sensitive rods needed for night vision. Owl monkeys and capuchin monkeys are said to have evolved from the same ancestor. Researches say that the eyes in these monkeys have the capability to develop as nocturnal (active at night), or diurnal (active in the day), based on the environments needs. Scientists looked for the reason as to why owl monkeys developed more rods than cones, and vise versa for capuchin monkeys. Fetuses of both species were studyed in the process. A Cornell professor said that the two monkeys evolved from a common ancestor 15 million years ago that had a diurnal eye. It was found that an extended period of progenitor cell proliferation in the nocturnal owl monkey was the reason for it developing more rods than cones. For the full article, click here.
Being a Christian, I believe that these scientists are completely wrong because this earth has not even existed for one million years, so to say that these monkeys evolved fifteen million years ago is rediculous. It is interesting to see the differences in the two closely related species, but they are different because God made them that way, they did not evolve over time. This is another example of the fascinating creatures God has put on this earth and we should cherish them, and not mistake God’s work for something that happened by chance.
