Synthetic Sea Worm Glue May Mend Shattered Knee, Face Bones

December 2nd, 2008 by unkest · 3 Comments · Chemistry

Some bioengineers in the University of Utah have created a synthetic form of this superglue from the sea worm. They hope it will come into use by being able to glue together shattered knee bones and some bones in the face. This glue will not likely be used to repair large fractures, but small fractures where they can simply glue the small fragments back together. Read more here.

This would be a very good thing for the medical field and the chemistry field also. In large fractures doctors can repair it by screws and wires, but it is very difficult to do that for small fractures. This would come into play in those small fractures because this superglue is water resistant and amazingly strong.

This new glue would be very useful in the world of medicine. The glue could also maybe be used in other things as well. Small parts are often difficult to glue together as in model airplanes and such.

The fact that the glue is waterproof as well as very durable and strong is astounding to me. Most glues do not last very long once applied to the desired object. This would also be more comfortable than having a metal object being used to hold your broken bone together.

This is a very useful scientific discovery. I believe that this discovery will help millions and millions of people everyday. One question that arose when i read this article was “how do the scientists make the glue from the sea worms?”. This article was very interesting to me because many people in my family have had knee surgery. If this glue can repair small fractures maybe some other people who need surgery can possibly have a procedure with this glue. This is glue will be a very useful contribution to the world.

Onw thing that makes me interesting is that how did they found that thing in the sea??? How did they know that???
Anyways it is really big discovery.
I hope that they can make it more usful that not even small fractures but also broken bone and we don’t need to put solid thing and wait for like month to get better.
