“Gray’s Paradox” Solved: Researchers Discover Secret Of Speedy Dolphins

December 1st, 2008 by watsonme · 1 Comment · Biology

There was something odd about dolphins that zoologist, Sir James Gray couldn’t quite understand. He studied dolphins swimming at speeds of up to 20mph. His conclusion was that a dolphins muscles couldn’t support its speed. He said that they could not possibly be able to produce enough force to speed through the water without the drag. At first Gray thought that the reason must be their skin that reduced the drag, but that was not the answer. He later used an instrument to track the movement of the water as dolphins swam, it calculated the force that the dolphins were using. The calculations showed that the dolphins used 200 pounds of force while flapping their tail. He concluded that it was not their skin but that they actually did have enough force and strength to fly through the water without the drag.

I think its amazing, the things that are underestimated. The reason scientists were stumped by a dolphin’s speed was because they thought that a dolphin would never be strong enough to swim so fast underwater, however it was their strength that allowed them to move so fast.

Isn’t the power of God’s creation great? Yes it is. As Molly said the dolphins were questioned on how they can move and swim so quickly. The scientists said that the dolphin couldn’t possibly be that fast with its weight. But with God all things are possible and scientist don’t always know everything. The scientists didn’t think that the dolphins were strong enough to move that fast but they underestimated them. Never underestimate God’s creation.
