Pros and Cons of GM Food: Is This the Answer?

November 10th, 2008 by matuzafv · 1 Comment · Biology

The worlds population is growing rapidly and our land is slowly diminishing. These controversial “GM” foods could be the answer according to some scientists. GM foods is any food item that has had it DNA modified in a lab. Only 18% of our land mass is cultivated for agriculture. By 2040 the worlds population is expected to reach 9 billion. How are we going to feed so many people when are land mass for agriculture is shrinking? This is when scientists say GM food. GMbananas can now carry a vaccine for Hepatitis D. Simply doing something as simple as eating these bananas can save adults and children from becoming infected by a disease that is both horrible and incurable. However one major problem is that all non GM food producers must be 100% GM seed free. This can be difficult due to the fact that the wind can blow these GM seeds many miles and if GM seeds are found in a non GM crop the grower can be forced to destroy his seeds. Read more here.

I think that the pros and cons of GM are very random. I didn’t know certain things about the food I eat in an everyday processes. Another thing I learned about was strawberries. One of my favorite. GM food seems relatively benign if it’s the result of cross-breeding two organisms of the same species, such as crossing strawberry plants with a deeper red color with those that have larger fruit. The type of genetic modification that causes the greatest ire amongst consumers and activists, however, is when genes from two totally unrelated organisms are combined.
