Chemists are almost able to use the element Boron to make drugs that will be helpful to our society. These drugs are hoped to cure cancer and other horrible diseases. All life is said to ultimately come from the element carbon. Carbon is right beside boron in the periodic table of elements. Boron is somewhat similar to carbon, but has some differences that are important, which gives boron unique potential in medicine. Boron is similar to carbon because they both combine with hydrogen to form stable compounds that can be used in biochemical reactions and syntheses.
This is important because chemists will be able to use the element boron in many new kinds of drugs and also therapies that will be helpful. These new drugs containing essential boron components will help to fight off cancer and many other diseases that affect many people. Boron compounds have a plethora of advantages for antibiotic drugs, because pathogens will be less able to develop resistance against them. Gradually pathogens like bacteria and viruses are able to develop resistance against almost any molecule that attacks them, but with boron it is believed that it would take much longer for this to happen. Much is to be expected out of boron used in medicine. Read more in the article, here.
This is a fairly important almost-discovery. The medicine we use now is becoming less effective because pathogens are developing resistance. Boron, however, is new ground, and not only will the pathogens not have any resistance against the medicine, it will, as Amber said, take longer for them to gain resistance.
However, I do not believe this will be a world changing discovery. Even if the Boron medicine is made usable, it will only be temporary. Even though it will give us medicine, we will still have to jump to another medicine eventually. To go a bit off topic, stopping the resistance seems like a more important discovery to find. We will benefit greatly from this, but like the medicine before it, it is temporary.
