Solar Energy Advances

October 23rd, 2008 by sherodse · 2 Comments · Chemistry

Everyone’s heard of solar energy, but now, thanks to chemists at Ohio Stat University, it is even more efficient. Before, they encountered two major problems: absorbing all of the sunlight and being fast enough to capture all of the electrons. These chemists along with chemists from Taiwan combined a conductive plastic with metal to overcome these problems. This material can capture all of the energy in visible light. You can read about it here.

This first caught my eye because it talks about the electrons gaining energy and then giving off light as they lose energy. This new material is so important because we are trying to be independent of energy from oil and use alternative sources such as the sun. The electrons stay free longer when they hit this material making it much easier to capture and use as energy. It will be a while before they are able to use this commercially, but there is hope that we will be able to use this in the future.

“There are other such hybrids out there, but the advantage of our material is that we can cover the entire range of the solar spectrum.” To have this would utilize the whole spectrum to use as solar power. This will be a very good breakthrough to natural energy.

First of all, it is nice to know chemists in the Uinted States are making progress on utilizing the suns power for an alternative. This will save the United States alot of money. I think this is the best of the clean alternative fuels. This will be a great and useful breakthrough.

Now since our world is in a economic crisis, this is really some of the greatest news to us. To know that we can use cleaner and more effiecent ways of energy. It’s one of the most talked about things that are going on in our world today, the United States is trying to be very independent on energy factors and we are trying so hard to use less oil and polute less of our air that is slowly getting worse.
It’s great that chemist are searching and trying to figure out diffrent ways to preserve our earth. They are working hard to find better and purer ways of energy. Even though it may be a little while before it actually becomes available I think juss that fact that we have a strong hope that we can heal the earth and get out of this horrible energy crisis . Anything to help us out of this problem will be juss enough to relieve us of it, and make it better day by day.
