Need a Million Songs on Your iPod Shuffle?

October 21st, 2008 by rafaust · 4 Comments · Chemistry

Researchers in Scotland have made a breakthrough that could store 500,000 GB of data on a one square inch chip. That would allow you to have well over a million songs on an mp3 player the size of an iPod Shuffle (1 square inch). I’ll leave the details to someone who is interested in this amazing technology.

Here is the link.

Current technology is said to accommodate 3.3Gbyte on the same area. That is a pretty big jump. The new technology can work on carbon so it might be better for plastic electronics rather than silicon based devices. They positioned two electron donating groups at a certain distance to develop the new switch.

There are a few problems though. They have not developed a means to address the memory. They haven’t figured out of how they are going to fabricate the switches either. I think they can solve these problems in a matter 0f no time. I don’t see why we need so much memory for songs and other stuff. I think they should work on other experiments for a while.

Their work could allow 500,000 Gbyte of data to be housed on 1sq inch of substrate. They also note the memory technology breakthrough could see the storage capacity of an MP3 player increase some 150,000 fold. However, the scientists also cautioned they have yet to solve the problems associated with fabricating these switches. Nor have they developed a means to address the memory.

This could be a very awesome technology for the world to take advantage of. There are some kinks still in the product but once they work it out it will be a very big hit. This would be a target for many products like: MP3 players, Cell Phones, Laptops, and even more.

This would be a very inovating breakthrough. Imagine having so much space to work with on your mp3 player! with all of that space you could store thousands of videos on your mp3 player with room for thousands of songs as well.

Puting the new technology on plastic would also be new and interesting. This would be pretty cool to have. The mp3 players with the new capacity would be rather expensive though. I don’ t think many people would be able to afford them….

Wow! Technology is advancing so fast and so much everyday. It is amazing to think that people can just find these things and make the world a better place. I find this even more interesting because just like Mr. Faust said a couple of years ago people could only store so much data in their devices that seems impossible for us to comprehend. Not many years have passed since Mr. Faust was a child and our technology now days is so advanced. Mp3 players can already hold a very big amount of songs but researchers have found more ways to hold even more.

To the question that was used for this article “Need a million songs on your iPod shuflle?” I think the answer for that would be no. In fact i think it would be impossible for anyone to want to have or need that many songs on their iPod. What these researchers found is very interesting but I think it would be better to find out how to do that for computers or memory cards or flash drives that hold that much data instead of mp3 players. Data and information and documents take up more space and I think people would use them more than and iPod that can only hold music and videos. Technology is amazing and not long from now we will have things that we didn’t even think could exist. These things are great for our future and for our generations.
