Giant Leaps to See Microscopic Structures

October 22nd, 2008 by olsonra · No Comments · Chemistry

In the last few chapters in Chemistry, we focused on atoms and protons and such. We also focused on how, for not being able to see the particles, scientists did an amazing job of figuring out how the particles were put together. This article points out that with today’s technology we are able to see these tiny particles: how they move about and what they are made of. Eric A. Cornell, Carl E. Wieman and Wolfgang Ketterle received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their research, but with today’s advances, they now categorize the Bose-Einstein Condensate in Quantum Mechanics. The article also goes on to describe the way they use this technology to see the atom and molecules inside the condensate. Leaps are taken, in knowing how these particles work, every day. Read the full article here.

These steps can be very helpful in today’s society. With this knowledge we can make huge advances in physics, chemistry, and possibly medicine. Every thing we do has a purpose, and can be used to help make our lives safer, cleaner and healthier.
