Cloned Pigs Help Scientists Towards A Breakthrough In Alzheimer’s

September 22nd, 2008 by foleyjt · 1 Comment · Biology

Millions of people in the world suffer from alzheimer’s and scientists are working on a way to cure it. To read the article click here. Scientists have cloned pigs and genetically modified them to act with alzheimers disease.  They did this by constructing the genes with the putative alzheimer gene and inserting into the somatic cells. Now by studying these clones they will learn a lot about the disease.

What a breakthrough in technology!  By studying the pigs, the scientists hard work may actually find a cure for the alzheimers disease. This would be awesome for all the millions of people in the world who are suffering from this disease.

The first pigs containing genes responsible for Alzheimer’s disease were born in Denmark around August and September. This special time was a landmark achivement in the effort towards finding a cure for the disease. Scientists from the universities of Copenhagen and Arhus, Denmark are now finishing up on this biotechnology. But this time with cloned pigs that have been genetically modified so that they can function as animal models for Alzheimer’s disease. In the US only, 5 million people suffer from this human Alzheimer’s and globally the number is set at about 24 million.
