The Mauritius Island

April 2nd, 2008 by sherodse · 8 Comments · Biology

In the movie The Seedy Side of Plants we learned that since the Dodo birds have become extinct, the seeds of a tree found on the island can no longer germinate. I found this website about it. In it, it says that they have found a way to make the seeds grow- by passing it through the digestive track of a turkey.
This is important because it is preventing the extinction of yet another species because of the extensive killing done to one. This dedication to helping the seeds germinate shows that people care about the world. Also, it can be used to show that the earth must not be treated as something for us to use without thinking about the future.

Hi Sarah! I don’t know if you’re still there, but I just wanted to say that I think the movie we watched today was called the Seedier Side of Plants? I think that’s right… : )

  • rauschrs

It’s actually the Seedier Side of Seeds. So you guys were both half right. =]

  • rauschrs

Actually, don’ t take my word for it…

wasnt it called the seedy side of plants?????
i thought it was that…=/ oh well idk only Jesus knows and Mr. Faust…;)

It’s The Seedy Side of Plants…an episode of Nature from a few years back. Here’s the URL for the show

Thanks for your research, Sarah! It seemed like this was a problem that was solvable. I’m glad to learn that it was! It’s also one more use for that most amazing of creatures…the turkey!

Several rare speceis of plants located on Mauritius Island are now dying do the decrease of stimulants. Such stimulants as The dodo Bird and rare species of bugs. These trees produce fruits that aere only attractive to these particular spcies. the fruits contain seeds which are dispursed once the seeds aree sread. but with the bird gone its not as wide sreaed decresing the plants life.

So, they have now found the replacement for the dodo bird? On the website it says the “if” the seed germinates then it won’t lead to the demise of the dodo tree. Is there any proof that this has actually worked?

    Interesting. . .
I wonder if the turkey is a relitive of the dodo bird? Hmm.
I love how science can make anything possible!!!
Except Jesus can do the same thing. Because Jesus is cool like that.
    Anywho. . .
I found it rather intreging that the turkey has the same effect on
those seeds just as the dodo bird has.
They should put a bunch of turkeys in a cage with a bunch of those fruits and see if they can help save the trees!!!

    BUT.
What happens if the turkeys wont eat the fruit? What happens then, hmm?
    Here is what happens next:
The scientists can put the seeds of the fruit in a different food that they like. Like mashed up acorns. Any other turkey food can be found at this website: http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/turkey.htm
