Hydrogen Powered Cars

April 6th, 2008 by laurenda · 3 Comments · Chemistry

In order to create a car that can be completely run on hydrogen, a fuel tank would have to be engineered so that it could either handle extremely high pressures for hydrogen gas, or extremely low pressures for liquid hydrogen to exist within it. Researchers from the NCNR have discovered a group of materials that may actually be able to undergo these conditions. Scientists have been studying metal-organic framework, or MOF’s, that may be very resourceful to making a hydrogen fuel tank in the future. MOF’s can control hydrogen under the right conditions and they don’t require the extreme temperatures that other hydrogen tanks might need, which is between 100 and 500 C. It is possible that the hydrogen tank could even be engineered so that refueling would be as easy as it is today.
I think hydrogen powered cars will be a major contribution to not only the United States, but also the world. Using hydrogen as a source of power will help the ozone a great deal, which will, in the end, help us. Hydrogen powered cars will also help save many people money and time. I think using hydrogen will also be a really positive use of resources.

I am personally all about saving the environment. I have a Honda Civic and Hondas are one of the most fuel efficient cars on the market. I hope that a hydrogen car is released to the public in the near future. In order to preserve the atmosphere we need a car that does not pollute the air and air quality. When the first hydrogen car gets released I hope that all of the cars released after have the same
technology. As of right now, I think it would be a good idea to convert my car to run off pure food grease or vegetable oil so that the air we breathe smells like french fries instead of disgusting carbon monoxide.

yes i would have to say this is a great task to undergo. I actually watched a show on this topic how hard it is to contain hydrogen because of the size of the molecule. I am all for the idea though. I love the snow and in todays world it is becoming more and more scarce. The earth is getting hotter the o-zone is depleting and to know that there is a group of people and they are willing to spend there time helping the world and replenishing hope for future generations that we will have safe clean air to breath and even for our future children to experience snow would be all the more better to create such a thing.

This would be a truly awesome thing to accomplish. With the rising prices of gases, this would help the world out a great deal. As Daetona said, this would help the ozone. The ozone is getting more and more depleted each year, and we need to do our best to preserve what is there. This will greatly help.
Even though as hydrogen car would be expensive to buy, it would be worth it because it would be helping the enviroment. I would surely buy a hydrogen car over a gas powered car. This is a very futuristic idea that I hope will be accomplished.
