Ultra-fast Lasers Have Great Potential

March 18th, 2008 by rafaust · 3 Comments · Chemistry, Physics

How fast is a femtosecond? Try one-quadrillionth of a second. New ultra-fast, ultra intense lasers have lots of applications in medicine and in the production of new materials.

Since the duration of the laser is so brief, almost no heat spreads to surrounding areas of materials or tissue.

Cancer treatments and revolutionary materials may be just the tip of the iceberg for this technology. Read more here…

I think that these lasers are really cool because of all the possible benefits for cancer patients. They would only effect the cancer cells themselves and not any surrounding cells. If patients could leave treatments without having any side effects like they are hoping to accomplish, that would be awesome. I think that cancer is something that affects so many people’s lives today, and technology like this could make such a difference.

    This was a good article.
I think hat if they are able to make this laser national and not just at MU, then it would be a big benefit to cancer victims or people with joint problems or any dental problems, the possibilities are endless.
This new laser that they invented is made to make precise incisions in surgery, prevent tooth decay without damaging the rest of the the tooth and to improve bonds between joints and implants.
When it came to the cancer treatments, now we use chemotherapy but with this laser, the patient can go and have the cancer zapped off and leave that same day without any harmful effects . That would be great cause now people don’t have to be radiated or take steroids or anything like that. but also the United States departments of defense even asked them to develop something for the military.
Even though it is still getting recognition it has a long way to go, with testing and such. This is a great idea because it will help expand the potential of medical science and probably do even more.

I think this article about ultra-fast, ultra-intense lasers is very interesting and could be very helpful to many people. I think it’s great that researchers are working hard to make a laser that can really help people who have cancer cells without harming any healthy cells. The lasers can also benefit people without cancer. It can help people who need surgery, to people who need dental work. These hi-tech lasers can help make the lives of doctors much easier and the lives of patients a little less stressful.
