Salmon Collapse in California

March 14th, 2008 by rafaust · 5 Comments · Biology

With the numbers of pacific coast salmon dropping to all time lows, the National Marine Fisheries Service may recommend the suspension of all salmon fishing from Oregon to Baja California. This article in the New York Times does not make clear the reason for the decline, though the overuse of the Sacramento River watershed for irrigation is a likely suspect.

This is not a good thing to be happening for the U.S. Some people make a living off fishing for salmon. The price for salmon would go up and that would not be good for those wanting to buy it. This sudden drop in salmon could lead to being endangered if it is not stopped. This could also throw off the balance of other animals affected by the salmon.

With less salmon, fishermen will lose thier jobs. This is not good because then they will not have money to pay for their homes and food for thier bellies.

Also, the salmon will not be able to reproduce quickly because it will be hard to find a mate. This is not good, because without many salmon the bears will also die. They will not have any food either, just like the fishermen.

With what Ryan and Ben said the price of salmon will jump extremely. The cost to buy even a little piece of salmon for dinner is already very high. The economy is already going down hill, so this will only add to it. People will be less likely to buy salmon and fishermen will lose there jobs, and even if the fishermen still catch salmon there will be very little left in the wild and the poor cute bears will die (what Ryan said).

Along with my other comment, we have to be careful and not disrupt their environment. If we don’t pay attention, the salmon population will get to being in dangered or maybe even extinct. We need to do something so this will not happen. That looks like what the plan is and I am glad that what is happening.
